NewsBreak: New drug approved by FDA for childhood bipolar mania

“The FDA approved Saphris for the acute treatment of pediatric patients [ages 10-17] with bipolar I disorder, according to an Actavis press release” from http://tinyurl.com/osm92je

Should children with bipolar be given psychotropic medications? While their brain is still developing? How bad do the symptoms have to be before the benefits outweigh the risks? This is a true issue particularly when psychotropic meds are known to have side effects that can include memory loss. This type of effect would be especially challenge while learning.

Personally I believe they can be helpful but would limit them to usage if their is violent behavior involved or severe oppositional defiance. That’s just my perspective though. I’d love to learn more about yours.
